The York County History Center, a cultural non-profit located in downtown York, PA, seeks a Registrar to process and care for collections. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits.  Full-time benefits are available – health, dental, retirement and life insurance. Vacation, paid holidays and sick leave are also offered. The salary is $14 an hour and $27,300 annually.

The position is shared and split three days with the Library & Archives and two days with the Collections Department. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday from 9 to 5 with occasional evenings and weeks.

The Registrar must display strong organizational and communication skills. Familiarity with computers, scanners and digital cameras as well as Microsoft programs a must, experience with PastPerfect a bonus.

General Requirements & Skills

Library & Archives duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Properly inventory and organize recent acquisitions accepted for the Library & Archives collection
  • Complete the proper paperwork with detailed descriptions of each donation and maintain library gift and donor records
  • Arrange, describe, and create finding aids for the existing Library & Archives collections improving community access
  • Scan and add images to PastPerfect
  • Assist patrons and volunteers in the Library & Archives Reading Room as needed and help implement policies concerning collections use, taking into consideration conservation of the material, as well as accessibility to the public.
  • Provide input concerning short, intermediate, and long range planning relating to Library & Archives
  • Work with other History Center staff, volunteers, and committees on projects that utilize Library & Archives resources.

Collection duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Collections, the Registrar will maintain object files, donor records and information, and process object deaccessions.
  • Create, update, revise, and maintain object records and inventories (paper) within collection database system (PastPerfect) following database entry protocols and standards
  • Generate, prepare and file object related paperwork
  • Assist Director of Collections and Collections Manager in the supervision of volunteers and interns, specifically related to data entry into collection database
  • Assist with routine collections housekeeping and maintenance
  • Assist with collection care and conservation under direction of the Director of Collections

This entry-level position requires excellent interpersonal skills in working with staff members, donors, interns, volunteers and visitors. Individual must be a team player and make decisions keeping the best interests of the organization in mind.  Solid organizational skills are necessary to maintain or manage all collections records. Must be able to lift 30 lbs. A valid PA driver’s license is required. Must secure a PA Background check. The minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies, History, or Library Science or related field. Consideration is also given for library, archival or artifact processing experience.
