Description

Community Historian for Diversity and Inclusion

Part time averaging 19hrs per week, temporary grant-funded. $20 hr., Non-Exempt

The Community Historian is a one-year grant funded position. The primary role of the Community Historian for Diversity and Inclusion is to develop community relationships in order to continue to document and include underrepresented histories in the new York County History Center. This position will work with the staff to foster community connections, to ensure diverse and inclusive histories are documented and shared, and to collect and convey a comprehensive history of York County.

Key Responsibilities

In partnership with key staff, the individual leads the organization’s efforts to collect and preserve the history of York County’s diverse communities, with a focus on the Latino/Hispanic and African American communities. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Establish positive collaborative relationships with members of York’s Latino/Hispanic community and other populations underrepresented in YCHC collections and exhibits.
  • Engage with the community and provide opportunities to share and record stories.
  • Identify and partner with community organizations to hold sharing recording and scanning sessions within their own organizations. Specific organizations that we would partner with include Latinos Unidos, Casa, Friends of Lebanon Cemetery and Crispus Attucks.
  • Participate in community outreach events bringing a York County History Center presence to fairs, festivals, block parties, etc.
  • Identify artifacts, photographs, videos, documents, and other materials that tell or represent diverse communities’ stories and provide opportunities to have personal collections digitized and/or donated and added to the History Center archives.
  • Conduct oral histories and provide training to YCHC volunteers and other members of the community to conduct their own oral history interviews.
  • Create inclusive content and participate in exhibit development for the new museum, library and archives. Provide access to community history and experiences through online digital exhibits including local history timeline exhibits and GIS story maps.
  • Advise staff and volunteers on ways to better serve diverse communities.

This is a grant-funded, one-year position with a possible extension for a second year based upon funding and performance outcomes. The York County History Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate because of age, color, disability, ethnicity, marital or family status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, military veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
